Meet Our Leather Artisans

KAY RYE Leather Artisan, Designer
Kay, co-founder, owner and manager of Sole Survivor. "I started working with leather in 1979. I specialize in making custom belts as well as creating one of a kind bags that are typically handsewn or laced. I also enjoy creating unique sculptural pieces out of leather, molding and shaping the hides into intriguing vessels and wall hangings."

ANNIE RYE Lead Designer & Leather Artisan
Annie is lead designer at Sole Survivor. She began working as a full time leather artisan alongside her father, Steve, in 2007.
"I am an artist and designer who specializes in creating one-of-a-kind, handmade leather goods. I use a combination of machine and hand sewing techniques to bring my designs to life. My process begins with sketching out the design, taking precise measurements, and creating a pattern. I work with high-quality leather sourced from reputable dealers, ensuring that no animals are killed for their skin as it is a by-product of the meat industry. I incorporate a variety of colors and utilize sturdy, long-lasting solid brass or stainless hardware to produce unique bags, wallets, accessories, and more."
Sam Overturf - Skilled Sewer & Leather Artisan in Training
Sam Joined Sole Survivor in October of 2021 working directly under Steve learning important sewing and belt making skills. Sam continues to excel at sewing and is always seeking to grow his knowledge. Sam is bold and unafraid when it comes to expressing ideas or suggesting a new way of looking at a project.

Our adventure began in the late ’60s and into the ’70s, traveling the Midwest arts and craft show circuit, bluegrass festivals, and similar gatherings that celebrated handmade traditions.
In 1985, the journey brought us to St. Louis, where Sole Survivor first set up shop in the Central West End on South Euclid, sharing space with fellow leatherworker Roger Steffan. From there, we moved into our own small storefront on Melville in The Loop, followed by a move back to the CWE on North Euclid.
As the retail landscape evolved, so did we—moving from the Central West End to The Loop, then Belleville, and eventually back to The Loop once more.
Finally, in 2014, we found a home in Maplewood, MO, where we've been happily settled ever since.
We love it here! The community has been incredibly welcoming and supportive, and we’re proud to be part of such a vibrant, creative neighborhood.
STEVE RYE † Co-Founder (1952-2023)
Steve once expressed, "When I started working with leather as a teen in the late ‘60’s, I knew that this would become my life’s work.” Steve's legacy endures today, as his family faithfully upholds the traditions and visions they cultivated through years of dedicated collaboration.
