Popular Belt Buckle Styles in St. Louis

Belt Buckle Popularity
The popularity of belt buckles comes and goes. At Sole Survivor Leather, our leather artisans have seen them come in and out of fashion multiple times!  Our first encounter with belt buckles was in the late 60's, into the 70's and 'early 80's.  That was a very long run. The reason for the popularity of buckles at that time was particularly due to the surge in handmade American crafts.

Belt Buckle Personality

During those days, u
nique belt buckles became a way of expressing your personal style. Some belt buckles expressed political opinions.  Others buckles expressed religious beliefs. Another category included one's profession.  There were animal buckles, automobile buckles, abstract buckles and more.  Oh and many buckles touted ones favorite sport, sport teams or hobbies. There was even a selection of buckles with names! Unlike today, there was no electronic media to share your thoughts or interests and that is why we believe belt buckles were so wildly popular in those days.

Many of the belt buckles offered at Sole Survivor today are the exact same buckles from those days.  While they are vintage designs, they are newly cast and therefore, of course they are brand new. The buckles are made of a variety of metals. The most popular ones are either pewter or solid brass.

Our Favorite Belt Buckles
One of our favorite collections is the Alice in Wonderland Series.  Originally there were 8 different buckles.  Currently 3 of the originals are available. This series is produced in unleaded pewter.

The Cheshire Cat Buckle - one of three in the series.  There is a fascinating story excerpt inscribed on back!  The Cheshire Cat is a fictional cat popularized by Lewis Carroll in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and known for its distinctive mischievous grin. The Cheshire Cat belt buckle is made of cast unleaded pewter and will fit either a 1.5″ or 1.75″  wide belts.

The Tea Party Buckle - another of the series, this one also has a story excerpt inscribed on the back of the buckle!  This tea-party turns out to be a very mad tea-party. In attendance are Alice, the March Hare, the Mad Hatter, and a Dormouse. The Tea Party belt buckle is made of cast unleaded pewter and will fit either a 1.5″ or 1.75″  wide belts.

The Caterpillar Buckle - the caterpillar buckle is our best selling of the three!  Appearing in Chapters Four and Five, the Caterpillar (also known as Russel) is a hookah-smoking insect who meets Alice after she has been shrunk to a tiny size. The Caterpillar belt buckle is made of cast unleaded pewter and will fit either a 1.5″ or 1.75″  wide belts.

Leather Belt for your Belt Buckle
Once you decide that you simply must have one of these really special belt buckles, you may wonder, what next?  How does it attach to my belt?  Do I have to buy a special belt? The way specialty buckles such as these attach to the belt is usually by way of snaps or screws.  The snap or screw allows you to remove the buckle that the belt came with and put your own on.  If you do not have a belt with a buckle attached by snaps or screws, we can help!  Sole Survivor Leather always has plain black and brown belts in stock for these types of buckles.  The price for a simple plain black or brown belt strap is $58.

Snap belts, as we call them, can be purchased in the Maplewood store at 7358 Manchester in Maplewood, MO

Sole Survivor Leather is open Monday - Friday 10-5 and Saturday 10-4.
